Exhibitions: Resources for Curators of Library Exhibitions: Caption (Object) Labels

A guide to assist librarians, faculty, or students who are creating an exhibition in UCSB Library.

Types of Objects Labels

Labels in UCSB Library exhibits can provide not only essential information (title, date, creator, media used, collection information, found in the “tombstone”), but often include a narrative  that explores different aspects of the work, such as its technique, or social/historical context.

Not every object on display needs a narrative label.

Examples of a Narrative Label

A narrative label goes beyond the information in a tombstone label to explores different aspects of the work, such as its technique, or social/historical context.

Examples of a Tombstone Label

Tombstone labels  provide only essential information (title, date, media used, acquisition information)
