compass You're welcome to quietly explore the fifth to seventh floors independently, but let's finish our tour on the eighth floor. Step out of the elevators on the top floor and pause.

exclamation pointsNote that the fifth to eighth floors are designated quiet study spaces. The UCSB Library provides various types of study environments to facilitate different learning experiences.  Students use the upper floors of the library for silent work.

Model of UCSB

A large model of the UCSB campus is in front of you, just outside the elevators. What parts of campus have you already explored?

compass Now go through the doors ahead of you and to the left.

Look around at the study areas and stacks and take a moment to enjoy the view. Notice that the books on this floor all have call numbers on the spine that start with the letter P. What subject area do you think this might be? We have a web page that explains the Library of Congress classification system that American universities use if you're curious!

The eighth floor can also be a good place to catch a rocket launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Rockets arch high over Storke Tower and are easiest to see at twilight. Interested students can sign up for Vandenberg Launch Alerts

compass Cross through the stacks at any point and exit through the doors on the opposite side.

sculpture bust of thomas storkeAfter you leave the stacks, you may notice a sculpture of Thomas More Storke by California artist Francis Sedgwick. Thomas Storke was a local Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist and media owner who helped the University of California obtain the UCSB campus from the military after World War II. His UCSB legacy lives on in the naming of Storke Tower,  Storke Plaza, and Storke Road.

compass Pass the Graduate Study Lounge and head down the short hallway to the left of the elevators. Quietly enter the Pacific View Room if no special events are in progress.

Pacific View Room

The Pacific View Room is a great place for quiet study, with a beautiful view of the ocean and campus. Special events may occasionally occur here, but notices will be clearly posted.
