Grand Canyon, Arizona

Grand Canyon, Arizona

This view along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon near Desert View shows the Great Unconformity, an angular unconformity that separates gently-dipping sedimentary and volcanic rocks of Precambrian age from more flat-lying sedimentary rocks of Cambrian and younger Paleozoic rock of the Grand Canyon. The high escarpment in the distance is the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Elevations on the Kaibab Uplift north of the canyon are in the range of 7,500 to 8,500 feet, with the high point being Point Hayden (elevation 8,872 feet).
