United States Geological Survey

The USGS is the federal agency dedicated to the earth sciences.  They do work in every state and publish several series which are excellent resources for research in geology and Earth science.

This guide is organized by government agency.  If you are researching California, you should use materials from both the USGS and the appropriate state agencies.
