Publishing Resources for STEM Authors: UC & ORCID

The University of California, Santa Barbara is a member of the ORCID U.S. Community. The membership is supported by the Library. With the membership UCSB is allowed to integrate five campus systems with ORCID, which simplifies the process for registering for an ORCID and for writing information to a researcher's ORCID record.

If you would like a system in your department, program, or unit on campus to be ORCID-enabled so that researchers can give the system permission to automatically update their ORCID record, email orcid@library.ucsb.edu.

The UC Publication Management System (UCPMS) is an automated system that identifies authors' publication information from select bibliographic sources and prompts UC faculty members to verify the publication data and to deposit their post peer review manuscripts that are covered by the UC Open Access Policy, and the URLs for their open access publications. It is a closed system.

The UCPMS offers faculty an automated system for identifying and managing their published works. Publications uploaded to the UCPMS appear in eScholarship, UC's open access institutional repository.

The UCPMS is ORCID enabled.  There are three benefits to linking your ORCID record to your UCPMS account: 

•  The UCPMS will be more accurate in locating publications by you. When the system asks you to claim or reject publications, you will see fewer publications in the list by researchers with the same as you.
• Your UCPMS publication data will be synced to your ORCID record, updating automatically

When you log in to the UCPMS click Add your  ORCID to help us find your publications on the Web and follow the prompts.

The Dryad Data Repository is a open data repository and self-service research data publishing service. UCSB researchers can upload and describe their data for access and reuse, and create citations and persistent identifers for each dataset. There are search and browse capabilities for finding and downloading data. Dryad is free for UCSB affilliates with a UCSB NetID. For more details about Dryad, go to https://www.library.ucsb.edu/research-data-services/repository.

An ORCID iD is required to deposit data in Dryad. The first time you log in to Dryad with your ORCID, you will be asked to link your ORCID to your UCSB NetID. Thereafter your deposits will be affiliated with UCSB.

• ORCID registration page: ORCID is enabled for UCSB. On the log in page, click on "institutional account" to log in to ORCID with your UCSB credentials.

In the meantime, for those of you with self-generated email signatures, once you have populated your ORCID record with, the "good enough" or "best practices" information (see the How to use ORCID page?), consider adding your ORCID iD to your self-generated email signature.

The DMPTool is a free, open-source, online application that helps researchers create data management plans (DMPs). These DMPs are now required by many funding agencies as part of the grant proposal submission process.

The DMPTool provides a click-through wizard for creating DMPs that comply with funder requirements. It also has direct links to funder websites, provides guidelines and tips for answering questions based on data management best practices, as well as connects researchers to local support and feedback provided by data curators at UCSB Library Research Data Services (RDS).

We strongly recommend principal investigators include their ORCIDs and the identifiers from all project contributors in DMPs, as the tool is becoming more machine-actionable and these plans will be integrated as research products in ORCID profiles in the near future.

To facilitate integration, it is also necessary to set your record's visibility setting to "everyone" or "trusted parties."
