Primary Source Databases

The library subscribes to hundreds of databases that contain primary sources. Below is a very select list of these; to find others, go to the A-Z list of databases  and use the limiters illustrated below. You can also change "Primary Sources" to "Images" or other source types.database search interface highlighting that you can select History (U.S.) and Primary Sources.

California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives (CEMA)

The California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives (CEMA) is a division of the Special Research Collections of the UCSB Library. CEMA is a permanent program that advances scholarship in ethnic studies through its varied collections of primary research materials. These resources contain primary and archival sources from libraries and archival institutions in California including CalisphereOnline Archive of California, and UCSB Cylinder Audio Archive.

UC Library Search Catalog

To identify primary resources in UC Library Search, type "sources" or "personal narratives" or the specific type of primary document you are looking for AND [your topic] modeling from the examples below:

slave* AND "personal narratives"   

Quotation marks will search your terms as a phrase.

The asterisk * will search for alternate endings to a word: slave* will find slave, slaves, slavery, slaveholder
