The Chicago Defender is the oldest and most respected African-American newspaper in Chicago. The Chicago Defender was a weekly newspaper from 1909-1956, when it switched to daily coverage. The Chicago Defender was the most influential black weekly newspaper by the start of WWI, you can read more about the history of the newspaper here.

The Ethnic NewsWatch database contains news, culture and history from 200 publications of the ethnic, minority and native press. Nearly 500,000 complete articles dating back to 1990 are available, along with archival material dating back to the mid 1980's. More than 7,500 new articles are added each month. Ethnic NewsWatch is searchable in both English and Spanish, with titles in both languages; more than 100,000 articles are in Spanish.

GenderWatch is a full text database of publications that focus on the impact of gender across a broad spectrum of subject areas. Publications include academic and scholarly journals, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, regional publications, books, booklets and pamphlets, conference proceedings, and government, non-governmental-organization and special reports. The database provides in-depth coverage of the subjects that are uniquely central to women's lives, including family, childbirth, birth control, daycare, domestic abuse, work and the workplace, sexual harassment, aging, aging parents, body image, eating disorders and social and societal roles.
