Find Background & General Information on Your Topic

Below are some examples of encyclopedias in economics. To find specific articles in encyclopedias, use UC Library Search.

For example:

  • incentive* (the asterisk * (shift 8 on your keyboard) will bring up alternate endings to your word: incentive, incentives)
  • "command economy"  (the quotation marks search as a phrase) 

When you get your results, from the left toolbar select Resource Type > Reference Entries.

Below are some examples of economics dictionaries. To find others, use UC Library Search and type the word dictionary plus one or more search terms. 

Use quotation marks to search your term as a complete phrase. Use the asterisk * wildcard to search all variant endings of your word: market* will retrieve market, markets, marketing...

When you get your results, select Resource Type > Books from the left toolbar.

Each handbook below presents an accurate, self-contained survey of the current state of the topic.

These surveys summarize the most recent discussions in journals, and elucidate new developments. Although original material is also included, it mainly consists of comprehensive and accessible surveys.

Selected Handbooks of interest to UCSB are below. To find others, use UC Library Search and type handbook and combine it with any terms of your choice.

Encyclopedias:

  • Encyclopedias provide excellent introductions to many aspects of research and can provide you with keywords to use in your searches.

Dictionaries:

  • Subject dictionaries are a great way to familiarize yourself with words and phrases used in research.

Handbooks & Manuals:

  • These sources are often good for providing established scientific techniques in research.
