The ABS Diversity Committee (DC) advocates for equitable and inclusive practices in our society, at our annual meeting, and in the communities and environments occupied by our membership. The Association of Black Women Physicians is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1982 that is committed to community health literacy and public health advocacy. We provide an ongoing forum to support the success of African-American women in medicine, science, and public health. Because black women make up of only 2% of the physician workforce, ABWP creates critical opportunities for social networking and mentorship to students and trainees to increase diversity in the medical profession, specifically by supporting the pipeline of future Black women physicians. Annually, ABWP distributes scholarships to deserving medical students.

The Black Microbiologists Association (BMA) was created in response to the sustained underrepresentation of Black people in microbiological education, training and research both here in the U.S. and globally. The Earth Science Women’s Network (ESWN) began informally in 2002, amongst a group of women atmospheric scientists from different institutions who recognized the need for more support and community amongst women scientists. ESWN’s mission is to support the scientists of today and welcome the scientists of tomorrow. Women and black, indigenous and people of color are importantly underrepresented in the geosciences/Earth sciences. As of 2020, women make up, on average, 20% of faculty in geoscience-related fields, nearly double the representation there was two decades ago. Even in disciplines with the majority of advanced degrees earned by women, senior and leadership positions are still dominated by men. Of the 40% of geosciences bachelor’s degrees earned by women in 2014, only 5% were earned by women of color. The number of PhDs awarded to geoscientists of color in the U.S. has seen little to no change in 40 years, demonstrating that efforts to counteract gender bias have failed to serve women of color, specifically, and people of color, generally.

NACME is the largest provider of college scholarships for underrepresented minorities pursuing degrees at schools of engineering. Their mission is to enrich society with an American workforce that champions diversity in STEM by increasing the number of underrepresented minorities in engineering and computer science.

The Office of Inclusive Excellence (OIE) focuses on achieving equitable outcomes, fostering inclusion, and enhancing workplace culture for all EPA employees. OIE leads the implementation of EPA's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility program, including the Agency’s Section 508 program, and the Federal Advisory Committee Management and Oversight program. It advises agency leadership on implementing DEIA principles and priorities, conducts studies and assessments to inform DEIA policies, and develops metrics for evidence-based decision-making. OIE collaborates with senior leadership to embed DEIA into the agency's mission, vision, values, strategy, policies, and practices.
