FAMST 101F: Newspapers

Newspaper Tips

  • Many places have begun digitizing their local newspapers and making them available online. If you are looking for newspapers from an area not found in the below lists, try doing a Google search for location AND "digital newspaper" or looking at special collections libraries in that area.
  • We typically read only the article that comes up with our search, but many newspaper databases will allow you to read the other articles that surround your search results as well as browse the entire issue. Doing so can provide valuable context for your search results, telling you what else was going on in a location at that time.
  • Many newspaper databases will search the text of the article (not the subject or what the article is about). Consider using search terms specific to the era of your search.
  • International Coalition on Newspapers   (ICON)  highlights and links to past, present, and prospective digitization projects of historic newspapers. The focus is primarily on digital conversion efforts, not full-text collections of current news sources. Titles are searchable by location. Note: Not all links have been maintained.
  • Wikipedia: List of Online Newspaper Archives: A fairly robust and up to date list of newspapers (free and for-profit).
