It was adopted as a response to the so-called invisibility of ethnic blacks while discussing issues of ethnicity. Although outwardly ethnic identity is considered more important than racial identity, the reality is that discrimination based on race is still predominant in all ethnic groups. Other terms used to describe this group are Afro-Latin@, Afro-Hispanic, or Black Hispanic. So when searching for Afro-Latinos is necessary to use different terms and synonyms to capture all possible articles and books on the topic.

When searching for books or articles try the following terms in the keyword search box to find materials in your topic:

  • Afro-Latino
  • Afro-Latin American
  • Afro-Hispanic
  • Black Hispanic
  • Black Latino
  • Afro or Black [ethnic/national group]
  • Black Puerto Rican
  • Afro- Cuban
 Note: Most databases prefer term is Black. Combine it using AND Latino OR Hispanic OR a country, e.g. Mexico, Brazil, etc.
