The UCSB Library uses the Library of Congress (LC) Classification System to assign call numbers to books and other print materials. Think of them as individual tags. You will need to have the call number of a physical book in order to find it on the shelf.
LC call numbers begin with letters of the alphabet. These describe the broad subject heading that the book has been assigned. The letters and numbers that follow serve to narrow down the subject.
Call numbers are on the spines of books so that you can see them as you browse the shelves.
