Instructor Guide to the Makerspace

A guide for instructors to learn how Makerspace services can support their teaching or research.

Welcome

Welcome! This guide is to assist faculty and instructors with using the Makerspace as a part of their teaching practice.

The Makerspace is a free, creative resource available to all UCSB students, faculty, and staff. We offer access to technology including 3D printing, laser cutting, sewing, electronics prototyping, and more. Our student staff provide peer-mentorship through in-person trainings and project-based workshops to help those of all skill-levels utilize our resources.

How can the Makerspace aid my teaching?

Creative tools for making and prototyping are available to support your teaching and research. Our staff can provide expertise for you or your students on these emerging technologies. We can help by:

  • Providing your students with access to creative tools and staff support.
  • Assisting instructors in the development of multi-modal assignments that use our tools.
  • Granting specialized access to 3D printers to shorten queue times for classes or labs.
  • Assisting instructors and TAs in the creation of teaching aides that bring course materials to life.

This guide is written to outline our services available to instructors. It is not all encompassing, so if you have an idea for how our space could partner with your class or research lab, please complete our Class Integration Interest form below.
