Global Studies 196B (Mansour, Winter 2025): Software & Tools for Research

Getting Started

There are many tools available to you that can help you conduct, organize, and complete your research. Below, we've selected some handy tools that are freely available to use.

Research Tools

Zotero - A free, open source tool to help you collect, organize, cite, and share research. Learn more about the tool and how to use it by consulting our research guide on Zotero Basics.

Tropy - a free open source software that allows you to organize and describe images of research material. This tool is especially helpful for those working with primary texts in archives or taking photos while on fieldwork. Learn more about how to use it by consulting their documentation.

Conifer - Is a free web archiving service that allows researchers to create an interactive copy of a web page that can be browsed and engaged with. This tool is useful for those referencing digital texts, or the sites of NGOs or government agencies where the content may change frequently, or is unstable.

Perma.cc - A free service that helps researchers create durable, archived links to digital content referenced in research and publications. Learn more about how it works, and how you might use it as part of your research practice, by reading About Perma.cc. You can also read this brief explainer. Sign up for an account through UCSB Library, using the Perma.cc Account Request Form.
