To give you some hands-on practice with Zotero we have collected a group of links to items you can download for practice.

Note that these examples demonstrate some of the issues you may encounter as you move from database to database.

When you are done with your practice downloads, search on the word "wombat" to find them in your library so you can delete them.

UC Library Search

Book Record
Watch the Zotero icon change as you open this link. It should change to the book icon.
Article Record
When you open this record note that the Zotero icon mistakenly identifies it as a book. However, when you download the record it will realize it is an article and correct itself.

WorldCat

Book Record
When you open this record the Zotero icon should change to a book.
Dissertation Record
The Zotero icon initially changes to a book, but when you download the record it corrects it and puts it in as a thesis. NOTE: To have a full citation to the thesis you will need to copy/paste information from the record such as the thesis type, university name, and location.

Academic Search Complete

Article Record
TIP: It is often better to add records that have the full text linked. Click on "Access options" and then choose "Get it at UC". Once you are in UC Library Search, use one of the links under "Access Online" and keep going until you get to the PDF online. Download it from there.

JSTOR

Article Record
TIP: Open the full text of one article and accept the terms of use before downloading records from JSTOR. This will enable it to download the PDFs as attachments.

PDFs

Sample PDF
When you download this record, Zotero will examine the PDF and collect whatever metadata it can identify. You should compare the record to the PDF and fill in any missing fields.

Step 1: Click on the folder icon and select a few items to import into your Zotero library.

After the workshop, you can easily find and delete the sample records from your library. Just search on the word "wombat".
