LING 80: Endangered Languages

Guidelines

Linguistics 80, Endangered languages

Language Report Guidelines

Due: Friday, May 2 by 2pm

Students must select one endangered language and answer questions pertaining to the language’s status and future. These questions will address the demography of the language, the historical context in which the language became endangered (including what events led to the physical and cultural dangers), the domains of use of the language, revitalization programs, and so on. The language reports must be at least 1000 words and should be submitted on Gauchospace by Friday, May 2 at 2pm.

Choose one endangered language from www.endangeredlanguages.com and the questions below pertaining to the language’s status. If you cannot find enough information from reputable sources to answer these questions, you should pick a different language. Do not guess at the answers. Remember that books (made of paper and frequently housed in libraries!) are often quite useful. You may not use Wikipedia as a source for this paper, but Wikipedia is a great place to look for other sources. You should write the report in paragraphs and include an introduction and conclusion, rather than simply listing the answers to each question.

Format and length

Your assignment should be at least 1000 words, submitted on Gauchospace as a word document or PDF. Make your paper look like a paper. This means using a normal font size (12 point is standard), using reasonable margins, providing a title, and numbering pages. Please provide citations in the body of the text for all sources used in your report. If the information in a paragraph is all from a single source, it is sufficient to include one citation per paragraph. Include a separate bibliography. Linguistics style is closest to APA, but any format is okay, as long as you are consistent.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is copying someone else’s work (such as a website about the language) without properly attributing the ideas to that person. Plagiarism will not be tolerated in this course. Intentional plagiarism will automatically result in a zero on this assignment, and, depending on the severity, may result in
