AI and Academic Use

Introduction to AI in Grant Writing

Funding agencies are still developing policies and best practices regarding acceptable uses of AI in grant processes. This is an emerging area and we urge all researchers to check with their program officers or research administrators to confirm before incorporating AI in your grant application.

For example:

The NIH "prohibits use of generative AI technology in the peer review of grant applications and contract proposals" and offers warnings about the use of AI tools in crafting applications.

Likewise, in the review process, grant reviewers are generally restricted from using GenAI in their review of grant applications. For example, the NSF explicitly prohibits the uploading of grant applications to AI tools for the purposes of review.
