AI and Academic Use

Introduction to AI and Academic Publishing

Academic publishers have varied expectations when it comes to AI-assisted scholarship, but, in general, AI-authored, or co-authored manuscripts are largely prohibited.

Exceptions are sometimes made for some submissions with limited use of AI in the following circumstances:

  • Selected AI content (e.g. images, charts, etc.) that is properly identified as being AI-generated
  • AI-assisted proofreading and editorial improvements (e.g. grammatical, style)
  • AI-generated citations, bibliography, or works cited

Publishing bodies like the Committee for Publication Ethics, the World Association of Medical Editors, and the JAMA Network have published their recommendations and policies related to AI and authorship, and we recommend consulting with these before submitting work that substantially involves the use of AI tools.

Please also check with the specific publisher to confirm their policies, and be aware that expectations may shift as the capabilities and attitudes towards tools changes. We recommend following best practices in your field, and transparently documenting and disclosing all tools you use and the manner in which you've used them.
