Exhibition on display in UCSB Library, Special Research Collections, through June 21, 2024. Check open hours here.
UCSB Library is pleased to present this exhibition in conjunction with the UCSB Reads 2024 book Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us. The exhibition's title Cultura Cura (culture cures) embodies the book's central concept that the arts, through nurturing community and creativity, can change us for the better.
Cultura Cura celebrates the 50th anniversary of Los Angeles cultural arts center and studio Self Help Graphics & Art (SHG). Exhibition materials are drawn from the Library's California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives, which includes an extensive collection of SHG studio silk screen prints, as well as organizational records, photographs, and ephemera.
SHG fosters the creation and advancement of new art works by Chicana/o and Latinx artists through experimental and innovative printmaking techniques and other visual art forms. They are an organization rooted in community; and since 1973, have been at the intersection of arts and social justice, providing a home that fosters the creativity and development of local artists.
