The rising cost of textbooks significantly affects student success and can contribute to lower retention rates, particularly among historically marginalized and financially vulnerable student groups. At UCSB, the estimated cost for books and supplies in 2024–2025 is $1,380 (https://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/cost-of-attendance), in addition to tuition, health insurance, housing, personal expenses, and campus fees. These cumulative costs make it increasingly difficult for many students to obtain the learning materials essential for their academic success.
