Open Educational Resources & Affordable Course Materials: Affordable Course Materials

Why Affordable Course Materials are Important

The rising cost of textbooks significantly affects student success and can contribute to lower retention rates, particularly among historically marginalized and financially vulnerable student groups. At UCSB, the estimated cost for books and supplies in 2024–2025 is $1,380 (https://www.finaid.ucsb.edu/cost-of-attendance), in addition to tuition, health insurance, housing, personal expenses, and campus fees. These cumulative costs make it increasingly difficult for many students to obtain the learning materials essential for their academic success.

The UCSB Library can help:

Course Reserves (Print & Electronic)

PURCHASE course materials and place Library-owned resources or faculty-owned textbooks on Course Reserves. (These include textbooks, articles, e-books, book chapters, films, music, and other formats.) https://reserves.library.ucsb.edu/.

Library-Licensed eBooks, Journals & Streaming Media

ANALYZE your syllabi against our electronic collection to ensure that no students are purchasing materials to which the Library already subscribes.
