Statistics & Datasets
Statistics and datasets are important information when doing either social or health sciences. Many Non-Governmental (NGO) and Non-Profit (NPO) organizations gather all type of data to create statistical, economic, and/or health reports which help developed national and regional policies. Below is a list of reliable resources where you can find this type of information for your research on the Caribbean.
Note: Infographics, a visual way to present data, relay on statistical data! Many government agencies, NGOs, and NPOs use infographics as a way to educate the public. For example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a Global Health site with very useful data and infographics, like the one I am sharing here about Cancer in the Caribbean.

Statistics and Data available for Latin America & the Caribbean
- Latin American Election Statistics: A Guide to Sources (UCSD)This electronic resource was created by Karen Lindvall-Larson, retired Latin American Studies Librarian at UC San Diego and consists of a series of volumes on selected Latin American and Caribbean countries that provide chronologies of elections since independence at the municipal, state, and federal levels and list sources of statistics for each election as identified. Countries of interest: Cuba and Dominican Republic. The project was discontinued but you can still access the data from the Archive-It website.
- United Nations-Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL)Most of the statistics available is located and organized trough an integrated database (BDI-CEPALSTAT). This platform integrates social, environmental, MDG, gender, social cohesion, sustainable development, and the majority of the economic indicators, within a common environment under shared formats and characteristics. Report and data available to download in PDF and Excel format.
- Preliminary Overview of the Economies of Latin America & the Caribbean CEPALThese preliminary overview are both in English and Spanish, covered from 1997 to 2008. Reports are organized by country. Great resource a quick economic snapshot
- HIV and AIDS in Latin America and the CaribbeanAVERT is an international HIV and AIDS charity based in the UK, working to AVERT HIV and AIDS worldwide. They collect HIV/AIDS statistics for around the world. This link connects directly with Latin American and Caribbean statistics (tables and reports).

- Inter-American Development Bank's Number for DevelopmentA site that allows you to explore a snapshot of key development indicators for any country in Latin America and the Caribbean related to its macroeconomic profile, global integration, and social outlook. Compare the indicator value for each country with the regional average.
