Book Selection Announcement to Faculty

December 1, 2017

Dear Faculty,

Executive Vice Chancellor David Marshall and Acting University Librarian Alan Grosenheider recently announced the selection of the 2018 UCSB Reads book:  Lab Girl, by prize-winning paleobiologist Hope Jahren. If you have not seen the announcement, more information about the selection, the author, and about UCSB Reads may be found here.

The book lends itself to programming and teaching around multiple topics, such as science, women in science, higher education, graduate students’ pay, houselessness, life and career balance, mental health, creativity and passion, nature, and the environment.

Regardless of your discipline, faculty are encouraged to incorporate Lab Girl into a winter or spring course; the Library will provide free copies of the book to all students enrolled in these courses. As of today, faculty from Anthropology, Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology, Education, English, History, Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, and the Writing Program are either considering or have committed to teaching the book.

The Library will be sponsoring faculty talks, book discussions, exhibitions, film screenings, and other programs on campus and in the community.  Jahren will deliver a free public lecture in Campbell Hall on April 3, 2018 at 8pm. As dates are confirmed, event details can be found here.

If you wish to teach the book, participate in campus or community programming, or support UCSB Reads 2018, or if you have any questions, please contact me:
