The Ethnic & Gender Studies Collection support interdisciplinary research and teaching at UCSB. The six collections are located in the 4 story wing of the Library. The collections consist of the Andelson collection (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender studies), Asian American Studies collection, Black Studies collection, Colección Tloque Nahuaque (Chicana/o Studies Collection, Feminist Studies collection, and Native American collection.
In 1969, as a result of student and community activism regarding the lack of ethnic studies programs, the Black studies and Chicana/o research departments were created at UCSB. Subseqently, in 1971, resources from the departments were moved to the Library. In 1995, with the founding of the Asian American studies research department and the growth of academic research regarding “women, Native Americans, gay and lesbian studies”, the Library expanded the Ethnic & Gender Studies collection. University Librarian, Joseph Boissé said, ‘’combining resources from gender and ethnic studies makes research more convenient. It does have an impact because these programs frequently cut across disciplinary lines, so this brings together more for their use.”
