About this Guide

This guide is intended as a reference resource for students enrolled in ED 99/199, and contains links to resources for students researching the International Student Experience in the United States.

Before You Start!

Before you begin your research, you will want to establish what disciplinary focus you may want to explore with your topic. This means thinking about

  1. What is it you want to know about this topic? Who might be writing about this topic and how? The questions you want to explore with your topic may change as you get deeper into your research, and that's okay! Understanding the differences in how sociologists would study your topic and how education researchers would study your topic will help you as you scope your research question. Check out the Databases tab to see a list of suggested databases to get started!
  2. What questions do you have about this topic? Based on your first round of research inquiry, what are you most interested in about this topic? One thing to consider is what resources are available on this topic-if there is not a lot of existing research on your topic, it may be hard for you to answer your research question!
  3. How are you going to find information to answer your research question? Pay attention to the types of research methods used in the articles you find that address your topic. What methods are folks using to study this topic? Will those same methods be appropriate for your research topic?
