The UCSB Library uses the Library of Congress Classification System to assign call numbers to books and other materials. These are the unique codes that identify the main subject(s) of the item.
Books on the shelves are arranged by their Library of Congress (LC) call number, which is their unique "address." Think of call numbers as individual tags assigned to every item on the shelf.
LC call numbers begin with letters of the alphabet. These describe the broad subject heading that the book has been assigned. The letters and numbers that follow serve to narrow down the subject.
Call numbers are on the spines of books so that you can see them as you browse the shelves.
