Course Description

Taught every winter, FEMST 100WS (Women's Studies) students learn about information resources and library services for researching women's, feminist, and gender issues.  The course is designed to teach students how to use research tools critically and effectively.  Emphasis will be placed on how to efficiently locate and access women's, feminist, and gender studies information in specialized reference books, library catalogs, subject specific article databases, women's studies article databses, and digital archives containing primary source materials.  Central to the course will be the assessment of the challenges in identifying, evaluating and applying information resources to academic research.

Success in the course will require a commitment to thinking critically about women's studies scholarship, and the production, organization, and dissemination of scholarly communications.  Success will also require developing the skills necessary to retrieve information from a variety of print and electronic resources.  In the process, students will learn about the social, economic and political aspects of scholarly communications. 

FEMST 100WS satisfies the Area C upper division elective requirement for feminist studies majors.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding how scholarly information is produced, organized, and disseminated
  • Using the UCSB Library Catalog to locate books and chapters, and to determine which journals the Library subscribes to
  • Choosing the right article database(s) for researching your topic
  • Using article databases to determine what journals have articles on your topic
  • Developing effective keyword search strategies to efficiently locate relevant sources
  • Navigating the library comfortably and locating assistance when necessary
  • Getting a grip on the research process, from topic selection to compiling the bibliography - aka "putting away your tools"

Requirements: Thinking, Discussing, Writing

  • 10 assignments based on lectures, handouts, and in-class activities 55 points.  Assignment 8 (Midterm) is 10 points, the rest are 5.
  • Attendance.  Since there is no text and assignments are based on in-class exercises, lectures, and handouts distributed in class, attendance is crucial - 20 points, less 1 for each absence
  • Final project (annotated bibliography). 25 points
