How To Configure a Mac for ERes Course Listening

Choosing a browser

Course listening on ERes works best on Firefox or Safari.

  • Download Firefox here.
  • (Safari comes pre-installed on Macs.)

Required audio player

You will need the QuickTime player to hear the listening examples.

QuickTime should already be installed on your Mac.  If you don't have it, you can download it here.

Connection speed

When you click on an ERes listening example and launch QuickTime, you may get an error message that says “To view this movie, you will need QuickTime 4 (or later).” (Ignore the “this movie” part!)

To correct this error, you will need to configure the QuickTime player for the proper streaming speed. The exact instructions for configuring QuickTime depend on the type of computer you are using.

How to configure QuickTime for ERes listening on a Mac

  1. Open System Preferences > QuickTime > Streaming

  2. From the drop-down list, select a streaming speed other than “Automatic.”

    • If you are on campus select 1.5 MbpsT1/Internet/LAN
    • If you are off campus and are unsure about which high-speed connection to choose, 512 Kbps DSL/Cable should work.

QuickTime should now function correctly for ERes.  You may continue to get the “must use QuickTime 4 (or later)” error message — just click OK and proceed normally.

How To Configure a PC for ERes Course Listening

Choosing a browser

Course listening on ERes works best on Firefox or Safari.

Internet Explorer is NOT RECOMMENDED.

  • Download Firefox here.
  • Safari comes pre-installed on Macs. Download Safari for PCs here.

Required audio player

You will need the QuickTime player to hear the listening examples.

If you don't already have it, download here.

How to configure QuickTime for ERes listening on a PC

For all Windows users:

1. Open QuickTime and go to Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences

2. Click on the Streaming tab.

3. From the drop-down list, select a streaming speed other than "Automatic."

  • If you are on campus select 1.5 MbpsT1/Internet/LAN.
  • If you are off campus and are unsure about which high-speed connection to choose, 512 Kbps DSL/Cable should work.

4. QuickTime should now function correctly for ERes.

(Here is another way to access the streaming speed tab: after clicking on an ERes listening example, QuickTime’s transport bar will appear. Click on the downward arrow on the right side of the bar and choose Connection Speed from the drop-down menu. Then change the connection speed as above. Again, “Automatic” will not work.)

Additional instructions for Windows Vista:

If you are able to hear the audio example but don’t see the transport bar (i.e., it’s blacked out), try this:

1. Open the Start menu and right-click the Firefox (browser) icon under All Programs. Select Properties > Compatibility from the drop-down menu.

2. Check the box for “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and make sure it says Windows XP (Service Pack 2) in the drop-down list. Click OK.
