Library of Congress Classification
The UCSB Davidson Library uses the Library of Congress Classification system (LC) to arrange books and other library materials by subjects and disciplines
Developing your Topic
One excellent way to begin your research is to think of the different words that authors may use to write about your topic. These terms labeled "Keywords" will provide you with a variety of terms as you search for scholarly and non-scholarly materials in the library (e.g. books, journal/magazine articles, newspapers, microfilms, videos, sound recordings, etc.). The main resources you will be using are the library catalog and "indexes and databases".
- Alzheimer's disease
- cancer research
- global warming
- modern dance and ballet
Let's say you choose the first topic. What other words might an author use to talk about the Alzeimer's Disease?
Alzheimer's disease, dementia, memory loss, etc.
Now with your terms you are prepared to use these to find materials on your topic...
